We Compared 6 Red Light Therapy Caps. One Stood Out.
After reviewing clinical data, diode counts, pricing, and patient outcomes across the most popular laser cap brands — here is what the evidence actually shows in 2026.
I've tested dozens of laser caps with real patients over 15 years. Most are overpriced, underpowered, or sold to the wrong men. One brand consistently stood out — and it's not the most expensive one.
Here is my honest clinical comparison.
"Most men buying a laser cap are making a significant financial decision. They deserve to know which devices are backed by evidence — and which are not."
How Red Light Therapy Works for Hair Loss
Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light — typically between 630nm and 670nm — to stimulate mitochondrial activity in hair follicle cells. This process increases cellular energy production, promotes blood flow to the scalp, and extends the anagen (growth) phase of the hair cycle.
The result: follicles that have become dormant or miniaturised are stimulated back into activity. This is particularly effective in the early-to-moderate stages of androgenetic alopecia, where follicles are still present but inactive — and critically, in men who are experiencing increased shedding before thinning becomes visible.
What Separates a Good Cap From a Bad One
Diode count — more diodes means more scalp coverage. Wavelength — must be 630–670nm to stimulate follicles. Personalisation — your stage of hair loss determines which device you actually need. Almost no brand gets this right.
"I've seen men spend $2,000 on 80 diodes when a $200 device with 258 diodes would have worked far better for their situation."

The Competition — Brand by Brand
Capillus ($799–$2,999)
One of the most clinically recognised brands with a long track record. Their higher-end models perform well in studies. The problem: their entry device offers only 82 diodes for $799 — poor coverage for the price. The top model at $2,999 is simply out of reach for most men. Clinically credible, commercially inaccessible.
iRestore ($695–$1,195)
Heavy marketing, inconsistent clinical results. Their entry-level device uses just 51 diodes — nowhere near enough coverage for men with thinning across the crown or vertex. For $695, this is very difficult to justify when better-covered alternatives exist at a fraction of the price.
Kiierr ($545–$895)
A more honest device than most. Good diode counts, FDA-cleared, and a cleaner design than some competitors. The main limitation is the same as the rest: every customer gets the same recommendation regardless of their hair loss stage. At $545–$895, it's also 3–5x more expensive than GrowLuma for equivalent specifications.
Theradome ($895)
Uses a unique helmet design and a proprietary 680nm wavelength laser. Only 80 active lasers and a $895 price tag makes this poor value. The helmet format also creates practical issues for daily use — it's bulky, less discreet, and harder to wear consistently.
Illumiflow ($549–$799)
Offers similar diode counts to GrowLuma — but at 3–4x the price. No personalisation. No assessment. The device is competent, but there is no clinical rationale for paying $549–$799 when GrowLuma delivers equivalent or superior coverage for $165–$230.
The pattern is clear: most brands charge far more for equivalent or fewer diodes — and not one of them matches you to the right device based on your stage of hair loss.
Why GrowLuma Stands Out
"The most common mistake I see is men buying the wrong solution for their stage of hair loss. GrowLuma is the only brand that addresses this directly."
1. Three caps matched to your stage. 120 diodes for early shedding. 210 for moderate thinning. 258 for advanced cases. No other brand does this.
2. Free personalised assessment. A 2-minute quiz matches you to the right cap before you spend a penny. This is standard in clinical settings — and almost unheard of in consumer products.
3. $165–$230. That's 70–90% less than clinically equivalent competitors. Currently available at 50% off through their Clinical Expansion Pricing programme.
What GrowLuma Patients Are Saying
The numbers are compelling. But what matters most is what actually happens when men use the device consistently. Here are three patient outcomes from my own practice:
"I noticed less shedding within the first month. By month three my barber asked what had changed."
"The quiz matched me to the right cap. Three months in — noticeably less thinning at the crown."
"At 58 I assumed it was too late. My hair genuinely looks fuller now. Wish I'd found this years ago."
